Do you mean as in “…the letter must be postmarked by such date…”?

If so, post office does that when you send your mail. It’s the ink stamp you see on letters that show the date of acceptance by the USPS.

A postmark is when the post office stamps the letter with the date recieved and voids the stamp so it isn’t used again. It is nothing you have to do, just put it in the mail box.

yeah. I need it postmarked by the 19th. Do I just stick in the mailbox like normal, or go the PO and ask them or something?

You can just put in the mailbox. The local post office will stamp it when they get the letter.

However lets say it needed to be postmarked on the 11th. It would be the safe play to take it directly to them. But since you have 9 days just putting it in the mailbox is fine.

That’s the thing, I’m located in MA and I have to send it to Cali. Anyways, thanks guys. I’ll just send it early tomorrow.

It doesn’t matter where it’s going. The postmark date is the date
your
PO accepts the letter. So if you hand them the letter on the 11th, it’s postmarked the 12th, not when it is received in Cali five days later (or however long it takes). So if you just stick it in the mailbox it’ll probably be postmarked the same day or the day after.

I only scanned this thread, so if this has been mentioned, feel free to ignore.
If you have, or more likely work someplace, that has a postage machine, you CAN adjust the date. I’m talking about machines that dispense postage onto an envelope. We had one at an office I used to work in. You don’t want to adjust the date too far back because it will look odd though.

If you’ve got the lead time, just drop it in the mailbox, and you’ll be fine.

If you want to use postmark date as proof, legally, you will need to have it Certified, which of course costs more, and you get hit with having to send it Priority mail as well.

Just go to the the postoffice and request a postmark, the person will stamp it right there (peace of mind). It doesnt cost anything, and I dont think you need to get the mail certifide. I usually get the mail tracking confirmation for the extra 50 or 60 cents for packages.

Exactly. I’ve had to do the same thing. They’ll gladly do it right in front of you.
