  • PRIDE MONTH 2022: Malinda Lo presents Inside the Telegraph Club: On the Real History Behind Last Night at the Telegraph Club

Malinda Lo is the New York Times bestselling author of Last Night at the Telegraph Club, wherein seventeen-year-old Lily Hu can’t remember exactly when the question took root, but the answer was in full bloom the moment she and Kathleen Miller walked under the flashing neon sign of a lesbian bar called the Telegraph Club. America in 1954 is not a safe place for two girls to fall in love, especially not in Chinatown. Red-Scare paranoia threatens everyone, including Chinese Americans like Lily. With deportation looming over her father–despite his hard-won citizenship–Lily and Kath risk everything to let their love see the light of day. Last Night at the Telegraph Club is a winner of the National Book Award, the Stonewall Book Award, and the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature, as well as Michael L. Printz and Walter Dean Myers honors. Born in Guangzhou, China, Malinda Lo immigrated to the United States as a child with her family, and grew up near Boulder, Colorado. Although she always wanted to be a writer, she studied Economics and Chinese Studies at Wellesley College, where she earned her B.A. She went on to earn a master’s degree in East Asian Studies from Harvard University and a master’s degree in cultural anthropology from Stanford University. For several years she worked in LGBT media, writing about lesbians and bisexual women in entertainment, and was awarded the Sarah Pettit Memorial Award for Excellence in LGBT Journalism by the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association in 2006.
